Williams Encourages Locals to View Carrickfergus Old Town Records
Mid and East Antrim Alliance Councillor, Noel Williams, has encouraged local residents to view old town records for Carrickfergus which have recently been made available online.
Mr Williams said: “Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Carrickfergus Townscape Heritage Initiative, old town records for Carrickfergus are now available to view online.
“These records are an invaluable historical resource for any researcher and have become artefacts in their own right. They possess a fascinating insight into the management of the historic town of Carrickfergus and are well worth a read.
“The Museum holds original records dating back to 1765. However, thanks to the transcriptions of Richard Dobbs, Dean of Connor and Rector of the Parish of Carrickfergus, it is now possible to gain some understanding of ‘ancient’ records from 1569 to 1747, which mysteriously disappeared in the early 1800s”.
Mr Williams concluded by saying: “In digitising these documents, Carrickfergus Museum is facilitating easy access to our history. I would urge everyone with an interest in the town to avail of the offering”.
The digitised records are available at: www.midandeastantrim.gov.uk/OTR1600.
