Question to the Minister for the Economy
Minister's Answer
In order to meet the targets established in the Climate Change Act and the Energy Strategy, our energy system must diversify to harness an increasing amount of indigenous and clean energy sources. Offshore renewable energy will have a key role to play in achieving net zero.
My Department, in collaboration with other departments and key stakeholders, have developed an Offshore Renewable Energy Action Plan (OREAP) to enable offshore renewable energy development in the north’s marine area from 2030.
Department officials are also developing a support scheme to incentivise investment in larger scale renewable electricity projects. The High-Level Design for this support scheme was published in April 2024.
I recognise the importance of offshore renewables for our net zero future. Incentivising the necessary investment in offshore projects will continue to be part of the development process for the support scheme, in line with the work on the critical path timeline for offshore renewable energy being undertaken by the Offshore Renewable Energy Action Plan (OREAP) Steering Group.
