Dickson Welcomes New Initiative to Tackle Work Place Hate Crimes

Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson has welcomed a new initiative unveiled this week by the Justice Department to tackle hate crimes in the work place.

In recognition of Hate Crimes Awareness week, Minister Naomi Long revealed three new guides had been produced in conjunction with the Labour Relations Agency – focusing on employees, managers and employers.

Mr Dickson added: “This week has been all about promoting how we can all act to tackle hate crimes in our society – but this valuable work doesn’t end now.

“These guides, offering practical support in circumstances where a member of staff becomes a victim of hate crime or witnesses a hate crime, will create an invaluable tool in supporting all those impacted by these issues.

“As we continue to build an inclusive society, we must ensure our places for work are safe for everyone. Yet sadly many people still face intimidation and isolation because of who they are – be it their race, religion, political opinion, sexuality, gender identity or disability.

“So while Hate Crime Awareness Week is coming to an end, the hard work continues and I welcome the input from the Minister of Justice in creating a workable tool for many to avail of.”
