Dickson Supports Travel Day of Action – 23 June 2021
East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, has called for more Covid-19 support for the travel sector during a Travel Day of Action on Wednesday 23 June 2021.
Mr Dickson commented: “The travel industry was one of the first hit by the Covid-19 Pandemic, and continues to face strict restrictions on travel, reducing demand massively. Many have had essentially zero income since March 2020.
“I understand that we need to ensure that travel is safe, but as long as these restrictions are in place, we must make sure that the industry is supported. Travel agents for example, are key High Street businesses and help maintain flight routes which also bring tourists into Northern Ireland, providing additional jobs and investment.
“Regrettably, they have had little specific support from the Department for the Economy to travel agents, and been waiting for months for an Executive Office scheme to pay out. The First and deputy First Minister need to get this money out soon, to ensure that businesses get the support they need to continue through this difficult time – jobs and livelihoods depend on it.
“Furthermore, as restrictions on travel continue, it is clear that there should be ongoing engagement and help provided to the travel sector from the Executive.
“I would also call on the UK Government to take the necessary action to ensure that the airline industry is supported through this extremely challenging time.”
