East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, has called for the First and deputy First Minister to explain delays in rolling out a financial support scheme for travel agents in Northern Ireland.
In March, the First and deputy First Minister announced the £1.175m Travel Agents Coronavirus Financial Assistance Scheme 2021, to be delivered by the Executive Office.
Mr Dickson commented: “Travel agents have had a terrible 18 months, with severe travel restrictions impacting the sector hugely.
“Regrettably, they have had little specific support from the Department for the Economy, so it is welcome that the Executive Office has taken the initiative on this. However, travel agents are exasperated about the lack of communication on applications and information on when funds will actually be paid out.
“It is now late June, and travel agents are still awaiting support, despite being told that these would be made in ‘early summer’. So it is vital that the Executive Office acts urgently to explain this delay, and ensure that this support is distributed as soon as possible.”
