Dickson Expresses Concern at Asthma Services Ahead on World Asthma Day
East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, has expressed his concern at the current level of care that asthma sufferers are receiving in Northern Ireland.
Ahead of World Asthma Day on 5 May, Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation produced a report highlighting the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on asthma care, and the need for action.
Mr Dickson commented: “The Covid-19 Pandemic has caused huge disruption in our Health Service, which was already facing unacceptably long waiting lists, and pressure on GP services.
“Asthma UK have highlighted a number of concerning statistics in regards to the care that suffers received. For example, over a quarter have not had their annual asthma review, 21% have not had their inhaler technique checked, and almost half have no written asthma action plan.
“It is vital that people with asthma are given the information and tools to manage the condition properly and this includes regular engagement with their GP. I will therefore be pressing the Health Minister to ensure that high quality asthma services are urgently rebuilt to support those that need them.”
