Dickson Discusses Higher & Further Education Issues with Local Institutions
East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, has meet with leaders at local Northern Ireland universities and Northern Regional College to discuss the response to Covid-19 and long term plans to ensure that Northern Ireland delivers on education and skills.
Mr Dickson commented: “This has been a tough year for Further and Higher Education Institutions in Northern Ireland dealing with the Covid-19 Pandemic. I have been impressed with the resilience that has been shown by both staff and students.
“I was struck by the calls from all for better integration between the FE and HE Sector, and promoting of pathways between them, as well as ensuring that we incentivise and properly fund courses.
“Perhaps another key theme of all the meetings was the clear goal of making sure the opportunities for our young people are available right here in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, so many talented young people leave Northern Ireland for university and never come back. This is a long running issue and the Minister and Assembly will need to take serious action, if we are to properly tackle the ‘brain drain’ from Northern Ireland.”
Mr Dickson concluded: “Students have had a difficult year too, facing Covid-19 and severe disruption to their education. It is important that the Minister also ensure that support is provided where it is needed to both Higher and Further Education students fairly. I am hopeful however as the vaccination programme continues at pace, that a more normal academic year can begin in September.”
