Dickson Disappointed by Newly Announced Increases in Gas Prices
East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, has expressed disappointment that another utility company in Northern Ireland has announced a rise in tariffs.
On Wednesday, Firmus Energy announced that gas prices in the ‘Ten Towns’ Network would increase by 35% from 1 October.
Mr Dickson commented: “I understand that these rises are as a result of major increases in wholesale prices, however it is key that the Utility Regulator continue ongoing assessment of prices, so that consumers pay a fair tariff for energy.
“This is particularly unwelcome as a number Covid-19 support measures are due to end including the furlough scheme and the Universal Credit £20 weekly uplift. So I have serious concerns that fuel poverty will surge significantly, as the financial pressure on vulnerable households only increases. So it is vital that the Executive to ensure that an effective Fuel Poverty strategy is in place to end fuel poverty in Northern Ireland for good.
“I would also strongly recommend that people visit the Consumer Council’s website for advice, and to check whether they can save money on their energy bills through energy efficiency measures or by switching suppliers”.
