Dickson Commends the Vital Work of Carers During Carer’s Week

Alliance East Antrim MLA, Stewart Dickson, has commended the vital work that carers have provided to people across society in Northern Ireland during Carer’s Week.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the important contribution that they make to our society.

Mr Dickson commented: “The past year has been extremely challenging due to the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and carers have played a vital role in supporting society during this time.

“It is concerning to learn that 79% of carers have not had a break in the past 15 months, despite this being such a demanding time. Indeed 72% of carers say their mental health has deteriorated with 78% reporting high levels of fatigue, stress and exhaustion.

“It is clear that our carers need better support from government. The Department of Health must act to provide practical help to carers, through respite care and ensuring the safe reopening of services as soon as possible.”
