Dickson Celebrates Opening of Ulster University School of Medicine
East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, has celebrated the opening of the Ulster University School of Medicine. The school opened its doors today to 70 students at the Magee campus.
Mr Dickson said: “Today is a very exciting day for the Ulster University. The addition of the School of Medicine, will not just add to the Magee campus, but will mean a great deal to the local economy in the North West, and most importantly, to the local healthcare service.
“Aspiring medics are much needed in Northern Ireland, and as they train, they deserve a state-of-the-art educational environment that will support and nurture their development. That is exactly what is being unveiled today”.
After a £1m refurbishment investment, the School of Medicine boasts high-tech, high-spec facilities which will enable teaching in the heart of the local community.
Following the re-modelling, the interior space, (1530 sq metres in size) now boasts an anatomy laboratory which will feature equipment such as anatomage tables and hand-held Ultrasound imaging devices; four clinical and communications skills teaching rooms, eight problem-based learning rooms, as well as hub spaces for collaborative and individual study, relaxation and socialising.
As part of the plan for the expansion of the Magee campus, a permanent home for the School of Medicine will be located on the riverfront, on the Strand Road in the years to come. It will act as a catalyst for an innovation corridor stretching out to Fort George.
Mr Dickson concluded: “I wish all the new entrants the very best of luck as they embark upon their new career path. And I congratulate the Ulster University, and all those involved in today’s opening, for their hard work and dedication to this project”.
